Message by the Director of the Department of Immunization, Vaccines and Biologicals at WHO

Immunization stands as one of the most potent tools in the realm of public health, safeguarding countless lives and preventing the onset of severe illnesses stemming from vaccine-preventable diseases (VPDs) annually. Nevertheless, the COVID-19 pandemic has wrought significant upheaval upon immunization initiatives worldwide, resulting in a marked decrease in VPD coverage.

As we find ourselves in September of 2023, I am issuing an impassioned call to action directed at all nations, imploring them to place immunization at the forefront of their agendas and diligently address the backlog of missed vaccinations. It is our solemn duty to ensure that every child, irrespective of their geographic location, enjoys unfettered access to the life-preserving vaccines they so desperately require.

Outlined below are key priorities demanding our immediate attention:

  1. Reaching the Vulnerable Generation: Throughout the pandemic, millions of children missed out on their routine vaccinations, leaving them exposed to preventable diseases. Swiftly rectifying this shortfall is paramount to shield these youngsters from the perils of VPDs.
  2. Reinforcing Immunization Programs: This involves channeling resources into fortifying healthcare systems, bolstering the healthcare workforce, and fostering a seamless integration of primary care and broader health services.
  3. Securing Financial Backing for Immunization: While immunization stands as a cost-effective investment, many nations necessitate additional support to underpin their immunization initiatives.

I implore governments, benefactors, and collaborative partners to join hands, pooling their efforts to ensure that all children receive complete immunization. Immunization serves as the linchpin for constructing a healthier, more equitable future for all.

Furthermore, in addition to the above, I wish to underscore the following concrete measures that nations can adopt to prioritize immunization and bridge the gap left by missed vaccinations:

  1. Conduct Comprehensive Catch-Up Campaigns: Encompassing all regions, with a particular emphasis on high-risk populations, these campaigns are pivotal to restoring immunity levels.
  2. Elevate Immunization to Prime Importance: Embed immunization as a central facet of healthcare facilities, making vaccines accessible and devoid of charges.
  3. Enhance Community Engagement and Outreach: Elevate awareness about the critical significance of immunization and confront vaccine hesitancy head-on through proactive community engagement and educational outreach.
  4. Collaborate with Partners to Secure Resources: Forge partnerships with external entities to obtain the requisite financial backing and resources to sustain immunization initiatives.

I am confident that through unwavering collaboration, we can attain our shared objective of ensuring that every child is thoroughly immunized and shielded from the ravages of VPDs.
