A dream to transform the Middle East and a history lesson for Israel

lesson for Israel

After Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah was killed in Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon last Friday, the Israeli prime minister said it was a step towards changing the balance of power in the region in the coming years.

Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu sees an opportunity to change the balance of power in the region, and he may take advantage of it, but he may sometimes regret it.

Although the Israeli airstrikes, patchers and subsequent walkie-talkie blasts were no less than a shock for Hezbollah and the martyrdom of its top leadership, including Hassan Nasrallah, certainly weakened Hezbollah, the situation for Israel is not very encouraging. is

The American broadcaster CNN in its analytical report says that recent history has taught some bitter lessons to all those who hope to bring about a major change in the Middle East, including Israeli leaders.

Israeli attack on Lebanon
When Israel invaded Lebanon in 1982, it had 3 objectives in mind, the first objective was to destroy the PLO in Lebanon, the second objective was to establish a puppet government in Lebanon and the third objective was to expel the Syrian forces from Lebanon.

However, Israel could not fully succeed in these three objectives, although the PLO members were exiled to Yemen, Tunisia and other countries under the US-mediated agreement, but the spirit of achieving independence remained among the Palestinians and for 5 years. Later, the first Palestinian intifada began in Gaza.

Israel’s goal of establishing a puppet government in Lebanon also failed because the man Israel wanted to head the government was killed in a bomb blast, followed by the establishment of a government led by his brother, who lasted barely a year. Could stand. In addition, Syrian forces also remained in Lebanon until 2005.

Israel received a ‘gift’ from the 1982 invasion of Lebanon as a result of the establishment of Hezbollah, perhaps the only armed force in the Arab world ever to force Israel to withdraw from an Arab region.

US invasion of Iraq
The lesson of history is not limited to Lebanon, but an example of this is the US invasion of Iraq. After the destruction of the Iraqi army and the occupation of Baghdad by the American forces, the American government believed that the regimes in Damascus and Tehran would fall and liberal democracy would end.

Nothing like that happened, but the American occupation of Iraq turned into sectarian and gang killings for which America itself had to pay the price. The departure of Saddam Hussein helped Iran increase its political influence in Iraq, and the weakened al-Qaeda got new energy, which later came to us in the form of ISIS.

A lot can go wrong in Lebanon
Even during the war between Hezbollah and Israel in 2006, US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said that all this is the starting point of a new Middle East.

Today, we must be wary of leaders who dream of a new Middle East, because a lot can go wrong in achieving that goal, and Lebanon has the potential to do so.
