One Year of Gaza War: Escalation, Widening Conflict, and Heavy Losses

One Year of Gaza War

The Gaza war, which began in October 2023, has now reached its one-year mark, spreading beyond Gaza and Israel to Lebanon.

Over the past year, Israel has launched attacks on Iran, Syria, Iraq, and Yemen, while also facing retaliation from these countries. The conflict was ignited on October 7 when Hamas fired over 1,000 rockets into Israel and breached the border fence, attacking Israeli settlements and military posts. More than 1,000 Israelis were killed, and hundreds of civilians and soldiers were taken hostage and brought to Gaza.

According to Al Jazeera, since the war’s onset, the U.S. has provided Israel with $17 billion in military aid, funding Israel’s Iron Dome defense system, fuel for aircraft, and weapons. Additionally, the U.S. has spent $4.86 billion on military operations in the region, including naval expenses to prevent attacks on commercial shipping by Houthi rebels.

The report also highlights that the number of U.S. troops in the Middle East has increased from 34,000 to nearly 43,000 since the war began, driving up costs.

How much is Israel losing daily?

An American news outlet revealed that Israel is losing around $240 million per day during the Gaza war. Over the past year, Israel has killed over 42,000 Palestinians and injured nearly 98,000 others.

In Gaza, 163,778 buildings have been damaged, with 52,564 completely destroyed, 18,913 severely damaged, and at risk of collapse, and 56,710 suffering minor damage but are no longer habitable.
