Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, speaking at the Climate Leadership Development Conference in Lahore, emphasized the need for climate diplomacy with India to address the issue of smog. She highlighted that discussions should be initiated with Indian Punjab to find collaborative solutions for reducing smog, which affects both sides of the border.
Maryam Nawaz stated that smog is not a problem that can be eliminated by simply pressing a button. Long-term and sustainable efforts are required to address it effectively. She stressed the importance of raising public awareness about environmental pollution so that individuals can take actions in their daily lives that contribute to improving the environment.
In addition to environmental challenges, the Chief Minister also touched on the political issues facing the country. She pointed out that Pakistan is not only dealing with environmental pollution but also political pollution. She criticized certain provinces and politicians for creating obstacles in the government’s development projects. She said that some individuals attack with full force politically, but neither work themselves nor allow others to work. Maryam Nawaz added that those spreading political smog have faced defeat, as the public is no longer interested in political instability and chaos.
The Punjab Chief Minister further elaborated on her vision, stating that her focus is on working for the youth and providing them with better opportunities. She mentioned that working for the youth brings her great satisfaction because they are the future of the nation, and there is a need for effective measures to help them move forward on the path of progress.
During her speech, Maryam Nawaz also spoke about her father, former Prime Minister and leader of the Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N), Nawaz Sharif. She praised his leadership, noting that he has never made false promises to the nation. Whenever Nawaz Sharif made a commitment, he fulfilled it. She added that the current government believes in practical actions rather than just words, and is working tirelessly to resolve the problems faced by the people.
In conclusion, she reiterated the importance of international cooperation and practical measures in addressing environmental challenges. She suggested that starting climate diplomacy with India would be a crucial step toward tackling shared environmental issues, such as smog, and developing joint strategies for sustainable solutions.
